After an exciting season, the DCG Girls Basketball team ended their memorable year on Thursday, March 6, 202,5 in the IGHSAU State Semifinals against North Polk.
Coming into this season, the Mustangs only returned one varsity starter after graduating four seniors who held a lot of experience; so the odds were against them. DCG had a very young team in 2024-25. Although lacking experience, the Mustangs took on the challenge and had a fantastic season.
A couple of highlights for the Mustangs season were becoming Little Hawkeye Conference Champs for the fifth year in a row going 11-1, and sharing the title with the Norwalk Warriors. But perhaps more impressive is over the last 5 years, their overall record is 63-3 in the conference.
Going into the postseason, ranked sixth, the Mustangs earned home games and picked up two wins over the Ballard Bombers and the Carlisle Wildcats to advance to the 2025 IGHSAU State Tournament. When the stage was set, the Mustangs played Maquoketa in the quarterfinals. Although developing a 13-point lead in the first quarter, the Cardinals battled back to make it a two-point game. Nevertheless, the Mustangs ended victorious to move on to the semifinals vs, yet again, the North Polk Comets. These two teams have met each other in the tournament for the last three years, each year being in a different round.
Although competitive to start, the Mustangs just couldn’t figure out how to stop the Comets shots from falling. As a team, North Polk shot 37% from the 3-point line making nine. This game ends the Mustangs season losing 52-30 with a 20-6 record on the year.
The 2024-2025 season was led by sophomore Macy Meyer who averaged 15.8 points a game and ended the season shooting 34% from the 3-point line. Leah Brauch, having her first full season as a Mustang, took on the point guard role and finished averaging 9 points per game. Another highlighted sophomore is Tessa Jones who shot 44.8% from the 3-point line this year. Finally, the standout freshman Ava Smid, a player who caught the eye of the crowd after starting all 26 games but more impressively was her 182 rebounds on the season. Despite saying goodbye to four seniors this year; Sydney Miller, Avery Short, Devon Carlile, and Neela Williamson, Head Coach Adam Jones has a lot of talent returning next year and there is a great chance the Mustangs will be right back in that state semifinal game, competing once again.
Congratulations Mustangs on a great season!
